Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:18-20

I know very well how foolish the message of the cross sounds to those who are on the road to destruction. 1 Corinthians 1:18

CHECK OUT these statements from insurance forms-forms where drivers had to describe the details of their car accident in the fewest words possible.

  • Coming home I drove into the wrong house and collided with a tree I don’t have.
  • A truck backed through my windshield and into my wife’s face.
  • The guy was all over the road. I had to swerve a number of times before I hit him.
  • I had been driving for forty years when I fell asleep at the wheel and had an accident.
  • To avoid hitting the bumper of the car in front, I struck a pedestrian.
  • An invisible car came out of nowhere, struck my car and vanished.
  • I was sure the old fellow would never make it to the other side of the road when I struck him.
  • I was thrown from my car as it left the road. I was later found in a ditch by some stray cows.
  • The pedestrian had no idea which direction to run, so I ran over him.
  • The indirect cause of the accident was a little guy in a small car with a big mouth.

Think about this: Sometimes your explanations of Christ and what he has done in your life will sound just as weird to non-Christians as those statements sound to an insurance company-and to us. You claim that Jesus Christ was the Son of God, and people blow you off. You invite people to trust Christ and experience his life changing power in their lives, and they laugh at you. You explain what God has done in your life, and they insist that you’re over-emotionalizing your religion.

You want your non-Christian friends to welcome your life-giving witness, but don’t be totally disheartened if they don’t. You never know how the Holy Spirit will use your words. And no matter how people react to what you say, you are sharing God’s utter wisdom. Give God time to take your words to the heart, where they will make a real difference.

REFLECT: How can you explain to your non-Christian friends what Christ has done in your life?

PRAY: Ask God for courage to share how you got to know him-even when you fear your friends might mock you.
