Is God Good? Does He Care About You?

"Have you ever felt alone? Abandoned? Like it really wouldn’t matter to anyone if you lived or died? That's how I felt at 11 years old."
~ Josh McDowell

Josh’s abusive childhood really messed with his self-identity and self-perceived value.

In his shame and anger, Josh slammed the door on God. IF God was real, or good, Josh saw no evidence of it. God didn’t care, Josh decided, and He certainly wasn’t powerful.

Yet a decade later, after bumping hard into God, Josh would decide to make it his life’s purpose to share the truth of God’s indisputable love with the whole world. Because now Josh KNEW that God deeply cared about him. Just as God cares about you! God never intended that any of us experience so much pain in this sin-drenched world.

What happened in the in-between to change Josh from an angry skeptic to an open-minded person willing to trust in God’s goodness and love?

Josh simply says that God used facts to open his mind, so that God could then pry open Josh’s rock-hard heart. God understands if you have hurt, disillusionment, and anger, too. Will you give God the chance to show you that He accepts you just as you are, so that He can help you to heal and find joy, fulfillment, and purpose?

Watch Josh’s testimony below to see how God started this process with Josh.

The movie version of Josh's testimony!

“One day I received one of the greatest thrills of my life. My father, the town drunk and a really violent guy, said, ‘Son, if God can do in my life what I’ve seen Him do in yours, then I want to trust Him as my Savior and Lord.’ He never touched another drop of liquor. If you trust Jesus, start watching your attitudes and actions because Jesus Christ is in the business of changing lives!” ~ Josh McDowell

We’re often careless with our words, and unkind with our actions. This breaks God’s heart. So how do we deal with our messy selves — and all the other messy people in our broken world? We turn to God. We acknowledge our desperate need for Him, and start to live for Him, rather than ourselves.

Does life suddenly get rosy when we become Christians? Do we find instant relief from our anger, shame, and pain? Most likely no, because we still have a sinful nature that entices us to think and behave in self-serving ways. But we start this supernatural process!

As we give God access to our hearts and minds, growing in our desire to please Him, we slowly begin to change and look more like God every day: Generous, selfless, loving, kind. God delights in our progress, just as a human father does with his own child.

We learn that God meets us where we are. No matter what we’ve done, or the baggage we carry — He welcomes us with loving open arms!

God yearns for us to walk in freedom. Free of self-sabotage. Free of anxiety, overwhelm, anger, and isolation. He’s the answer!

God says, “You are my dearly loved child.” He wants to do awesome things in your life. But first He needs you to accept your true identity: Forgiven. Wanted. Accepted.
